Our Soul Safari to South Africa began with two days in Johannesburg, where we visited the Apartheid Museum, a sobering reminder of the country’s recent and very bloody history. And a reminder, to, of just how far the country has come in a very short time.
From Johannesburg, we took a small plane to Madikwe on the border of Botswana. At Madikwe Safari Lodge, we were fortunate enough to have three of the most knowledgeable guides imaginable. They truly made the trip so much more than it could have been. The excitement began half an hour after we landed, when our driver spotted an extremely rare black rhino and gave chase.
Our days began with a three or four hour game drive, followed by a huge breakfast. I gave a workshop in the middle of each day, and then, after lunch, we took another drive until sundown. Every day there was amazing game viewing, enhanced by treats like early-evening drinks in the bush.
We spent the second half of the trip in Cape Town, and had the chance to visit the Townships and contribute to some very worthwhile projects. Other activities included a wine tour, a visit to the Cape of Good Hope, and an afternoon with a Cape Malay family where we learned to make curries and samosas.
Our tribe of 25 old souls hit it off better than anyone ever imagined. The conversation was always animated, and friendships were made that will last forever. One of our tribe even found her soulmate in the form of a guide (safari, not spirit).
Most of the photographs on this page were taken by my assistant Kelli (except for the group shots, which were taken by Dave and Naomi Estment, the two fabulous photographers who joined us in Madikwe). Some of these pictures will give you an idea of just how up-close we were to the animals. To have a lion stroll past you just a few feet away is a thrilling experience, and something none of us will ever forget.
